Synopsis

A history of dissent in the former German Democratic Republic that recounts the Kafkaesque nightmare that East Germans lived though at the height of the regime's power. The secret police, the Stasi, employed 100,000 agents, many of them ordinary citizens, to spy upon a mind-boggling one-third of the East German population. The surveillance was so widespread that it was impossible for many people to distinguish between true friends and informers feigning friendship. During the 40-year existence of the German Democratic Republic, thousands of people deemed enemies of the government were imprisoned. Once arrested, they were subjected to insidious mental tortures, even execution.
