Synopsis

The "sad empress" of Austria, also known as Sissi, took many journeys around the world during her lifetime. Twice she visited Egypt, once in October 1885 and again in November 1891. Comprised of a succession of scenes (mostly set in the marketplace, in cafes or on the street), creating a curious tension between contemporary Egypt and Elizabeth's hundred year old writings, this film is a portrait of the Austrian Empress as seen through Egypt and of Egypt as seen through the Empress.
