Synopsis
Asako lives with her fireman husband Ryuichi and their precocious, ten-year-old daughter Ai in a small suburban town. Asako is hearing-impaired and one day Ai is mocked by a boy at school because of it. The boy had seen Asako and Ai using sign language and he tells everyone that Ai's mother looks stupid and ridiculous. Asako is devastated to see her daughter being bullied because of her disability. How can she stop it? She discusses the problem with Ryuichi and they agree that the best solution is to offer Ai a positive example. Asako decides to join Hands, a deaf theatrical troupe run by one of her friends. Using mime and sign language, the company entertain both hearing and hearing-impaired audiences. Asako hopes that this new activity will help Ai become sympathetic to her way of life.
