Synopsis
The year is 1778. A group of soldiers is escorting Diogo, an astronomer, naturalist and cartographer, through Mato Grosso (the western-most state of Brazil) as he marks borders claimed by both Portugal and Spain. Their eventual destination is Fort Coimbra, built three years earlier to fend off attacks by Guaicuru Indians. On their journey they encounter a group of swimming Guaicuru women. The soldiers-led by the ferocious Pedro -savagely attack them. At first, caught up in the frenzy, Diogo is a willing participant, but he soon realizes he must stand up to Pedro in order to save the beautiful Anote. Eventually the company makes it to Fort Coimbra. Diogo soon realizes that his education isn't sufficient to withstand the harsh reality of the colony. He is falling in love with Anote, but is torn by what he has done to her and her people.
