Synopsis

Amid the rolling, green pastures of Middleton, New Zealand, where cheese is the claim to fame, 12-year-old Elizabeth dreams of tiaras and royal visits. It is 1953, and her idol, the Queen of England, has just been crowned. When the itinerary of the Royal Tour of New Zealand is announced, and Middleton is on it, Elizabeth is overjoyed. But an unexpected and illuminating friendship with Hira Mata, a Maori woman, causes Elizabeth to question her beliefs and puts her at odds with many townspeople and even her own family. Hira becomes a target of local hostility because her rundown house is along the queen's parade route, and Elizabeth must ultimately choose between her loyalty to her friend and a chance to meet the queen.
