In 1997, acclaimed playwright David Hare traveled to Israel and Palestine at the request of Britain's Royal Court Theatre, with the expectation that he would write a traditional multi-character play. Instead, Hare wrote and performed a one-man monologue, "Via Dolorosa," which was presented in London by the Royal Court in 1998. In 1999, Lincoln Center Theater transferred the show to Broadway, where it opened to critical acclaim and much controversy. Both productions were directed by the Royal Court's erstwhile artistic director, Stephen Daldry, and the same creative team. In the fall of 1999, Farrar, Straus & Giroux/Faber and Faber, Inc. published "Acting Up," Hare's diary about the making of "Via Dolorosa."
