Synopsis
A young woman who calls herself Zhang Xiaomei (she carries other ID cards with different names) arrives in Beidaihe in mid-winter. She seems to be one of many who come to the resort (the favourite of Communist Party leaders) in the off-season to kill themselves. But the suicide of a taciturn poet in her hotel makes her hesitate, and the investigating cop pounces on her hesitation. A strange, excitable man who thinks that women are like seafood ('You have to savour the individual taste'), he first abuses her and then makes it his business to reawaken her will to live.
