Synopsis

In Tampa Bay, Florida, the film begins and ends, in private homes where the police have been called to intervene in domestic disputes. In between, in a structure which moves through day to night, the film details the work of The Spring, Tampa's principal shelter for women and children. Sequences include intake interviews, individual and group counseling sessions, anger management training, staff meetings and conversations among residents and between residents and staff. As the women talk, a picture is built up of the patterns of power and control which underpin the relationships from which they are fleeing, and of the obstacles to their ability to escape. What is also revealed is the complexity of the tangled web of damage which encircles these women, and often their children too.
