Synopsis
Algeria, at the start of the 20th century. Jean Corveler, a renowned lawyer, returns from France where he has just defended the Marguerite rebels, accused of the murder of seven Europeans. He discovers his wife Eugenia, dead, in his bedroom. In a letter, she has written the words: "With all my love". Moving backwards in time, Jean remembers Eugenia's troubled life, a life closely linked with the fate of colonial Algeria. The violence she encounters as a woman, in an oppressive family at the dawn of the century, echoes another violence, that of a muzzled country. Eugenia, who is Dolores' illegitimate child, passed off as her younger sister, is faced with the problem of her own legitimacy in the family, where she occupies a usurped position. A daughter of colonialists whose fortune was built on inequality and injustice, she is also confronted with the question of her status in her own country.
