Synopsis
In the Indian village of Kumbhara Kota, Alagiri leads an unconventional life which arouses the animosity of the rest of the villagers. Almost forty, he's still not married, nor looking for a wife, but at the same time cannot do without female company. So he picks up women, often poor, willing to have a casual relationship, and shares his life with them as long as they don't adopt an overly conjugal attitude, in which case he simply throws them out. Despite Alagiri's warnings, his neighbour, who can't manage to make a living from the traditional village activity of pottery, accepts a significant sum of money as a loan from two intermediaries who claim they want to help him. He starts a sculpture business with the money but it soon goes broke. Unable to repay the money, he opts for suicide, along with his wife and elderly father. As for Alagiri, his life becomes calmer when he changes his mind about a young woman he'd thrown out of his home.
