Synopsis
In contemporary Afghanistan, an Italian surgeon and a war correspondent join forces to set up an emergency hospital in northern Afghanistan, a country that has had to cope with war for over twenty years. After the Russian invaders left in defeat and the country remained mired in civil war, the Taliban took over in 1996. Houses and schools have been burned down, sons killed on the battlefield and almost everybody is hungry, an Afghan woman explains from behind her chador, perforated by only a few air holes. Women may be beaten up in the street if they are seen showing any part of their legs. At the time of filming, mop-up battles are raging, tanks dominating the mountains, soldiers are trigger-happy and the landscape is strewn with mines, which have created countless innocent victims. The new hospital tries valiantly to help all of these war victims, but the number of wounded--many of them children, their limbs ripped apart by land mines as doctors despair--seems endless and resources limited.
