Synopsis
Santiago, a Cuban fisherman, has gone 84 days without catching a fish. The old man rows his boat quietly into the morning mist and suddenly the fishing lines tighten. An 18 foot marlin has taken the bait. It is noon and the battle has begun. The old man's long struggle to catch the giant marlin begins to succeed. He uses all his strength as he drives his harpoon down into the fish's side. The battle is over and the old man lashes the fish to the boat with ropes. But the sharks have come, drawn by the marin's blood. Fighting to protect his catch, the old man loses his harpoon, then he reaches for a chain and, finally, the boat's tiller. But he cannot win. The sharks devour the marlin; the old man falls, exhausted, to the bottom of the boat. The old man closes his eyes. The worried face of a young boy hovers above him. The old man is lying on his bed in his hut. He has been dreaming. On the beach a group of fishermen examine the old man's boat and- lashed to it- the reamins of the giant fish.
