Synopsis
Harv Beckman is a novelist who leaves his teaching job at a prestigious Southern California University and returns home to Portland, Oregon to run the family used car lot after his father's death. Harv has published two novels, which were critically acclaimed, but not financially successful. Coming home to Portland is difficult as he is having writer's block and must contend with the ramifications of class and money in his hometown. The family car lot is on Portland's Eastside, a poor neighborhood. His customers are all down on their luck, he doesnt run the car lot well and he's constantly in debt. When he accidentally falls into possession of a rare 1948 Kaiser, he is forced to take out a $35,000 loan to pay for it, only to have the car stolen. Searching for information about his stolen car, Harv embarks on an investigation that will lead him down the path of Ralph Styles, a deceased 1940s journalist and the car's former owner.
