Synopsis

Businessman Quang thinks that he recognizes Huong, a dancer in a bar, as a girl he met years ago during the war. At the time he was a soldier on the way to the south with his unit for his first combat mission. During a bombing raid he witnesses the terrible deaths of several of his brothers-in-arms. In his subsequent state of shock he follows an older soldier and together they desert northwards. On the way his companion is arrested, though Quang just manages to evade capture. With his last strength he flees into a manioc field, where a girl, Nu, finds him. Quang tries to persuade the supposed Nu to give up her frivolous lifestyle and return to her home in the north. Huong accepts the money Quang offers her for the journey and does indeed board the train - only to get off again shortly after Quang has left.
