Who is Gaja Gamini? She is the sign (nishan) of the eternal enigmatic woman, she who keeps her place in a world of men. She who walks alone, with the gathri of her belongings on her head, with the sound of the ghungroo on her feet. She walks alone, but if anyone wishes to walk with her, she can keep pace. Gaja Gamini: she who walks with the grace and the gait of an elephant is a classical concept, a leitmotif. Yet Gamini challenges traditional notions of the woman who is not homebound but independent and a wanderer.
