Synopsis

Captain Paul is bringing his condemned ship into harbor for the last time, fulfilling his orders by deliberately running it aground, abandoning it to the city's scrap merchants and their blowtorches. Relieved of his command, his passport confiscated, Paul boards a train in search of his former second in command and meets Moti and his pregnant and widowed mother Alima. Paul accompanies them back to Rulipara, the river village where Alima was born. Once there, and with no where to go, he decides to stay, taking up residence in an abandoned house and participating as much as he can in village life. However, his growing affection for the boy Moti and his mother is complicated by the villagers' intolerance of any contact between the widow and a foreign man.
