Synopsis

Lena is in her eighth month of pregnancy. The child's father has left her. Here, on an almost deserted highway in a desolate hinterland, she runs a small general store where people can eat and drink. Vilela is hoping to make a fresh start in life far away from all the wrong turns and excesses which characterised his existence in Sao Paulo. Vilela turns up at Lena's door; all he wants is a place to stay and the opportunity to start life anew. He sets about fixing up the run-down place; suspicious at first, Lena finds herself being drawn towards Vilela and, gradually, her feelings give way to passion. A deep-seated love evolves between them. But their great expectations and the interminable waiting for a customer prove too trying. Vilela hits the bottle...
