Synopsis

Ex-soldier Van returns from the war against the French colonial rulers (1946-1954) His village may be at peace but land reform and expropriation is carried out. The old women of the town have lost their husbands and the young ones can't find any. Van becomes interested in two women of the town, Nhan, a war widow and Hon, a former large-scale landowner in whose house he is billeted. The Vietnam war breaks out and the young men in the village are drafted. Van and Nhan become friendly with one another but the jealousy this produces among the women of the town keeps them apart. Van is also unable to have a relationship with Hon since it is unacceptable for a war hero like himself to associate with a former land owner.
