Synopsis
In rural China, Shiwa's father spins a spoon to determine which of his two children should attend school, which remain on the farm. Shiwa wins, his sister loses, and he begins the treacherous daily journey across a river to the school house. His sister remains his best friend and ally, until their father marries her off without Shiwa's knowledge. Later, Shiwa is faced with the decision to leave the village to continue his education or stay at home. In a way, the decision was made for him that fateful day when his father spun the copper spoon.
