Synopsis
In World War II, idealistic students join the partisan movement to fight against Fascism. At first, they know more of the philosophical arguments in favour of democracy than the practicalities of warfare. However, as they enter into real conflict, and some of their number are killed, they are changed by their experiences and forge closer links between their ideals and Italy's future. The film moves towards the liberation of Italy and the surrender of the occupying German forces.
