Synopsis
In 1980 documentarian Ira Wohl won an Academy Award for "Best Boy," which told the story of Philly, Wohl's then 50-year-old mentally retarded cousin. The documentary showed audiences Philly's transition from his aging parents' home to greater independence living in a group home. The sequel to "Best Boy" continues to follow Wohl's mentally retarded cousin Philly, now in his seventies. "Best Man" takes a look at his relationship with his fellow residents in his group home, his relationship with his sister, Frances, who assumed the responsibility for him after their parents died--and Philly's preparation for his bar mitzvah. Though the rite of passage to Jewish manhood usually takes place at age 13, Ira Wohl decided that his cousin had become a man, and it was only right that he celebrate that transition according to tradition.
