Synopsis
Ah-Chung's family, living in a Taipei shanty town, has not had a happy existence. His younger brother is retarded and is almost killed by a truck illegally dumping waste in a nearby national wildlife preserve. Ah-Chung's sister is raped by her stepfather. His father is an alcoholic, and his grandfather is senile. Convinced the family's misery comes from a failure to worship the gods properly, Ha-Chung's mother goes against her husband's wishes and persuades Ah-Chung to join the Ba Chai Chaiang. Despite this, the family's misfortune continues. Polluters continue to dump sewage water, chemical waste and trash near their neighborhood. Ah-Chung's grandfather dies on a visit to the country, and his sister is attacked by a gang and left badly hurt. No matter how sincere, forceful and frightening the Bai Chai Chaiang's performances are, some involve mutilation and other strange frenzied rites--blessings don't come easily.
