Synopsis
African-Amercian writer and poet Maya Angelou first discovered and was inspired by Robert Burns on the dirt roads of Arkensas at the age of eight. She was mute and living in a a poor, small town: "He was the first white man I read who seemed to understand that a human being was a human being and that we are more alike than unalike." Commemorating the bicentenary of the death of Robert Burns, Angelou made a pilgrimage to Burns country in Scotland and met with enthusiastic and fanatical Burnsians, who threw a party in honor of her vist and Burns' genius. In this film she explores her passion for his work and the parallels she sees in their lives, including their common roots in poverty, early love of literatiure and music, latter-day fame, commitment to liberty and equality, religious faith and passion.
