Synopsis
Shortly after her brother's death abroad, Yu Jane, a Taipei high school teacher, gets involved with a married entrepreneur, Xiang Guo-chien. To save his political future, Xiang vows to break off relations with Yu, but cannot. They continue meeting in a small, foreign town until one day when Yu learns that Candidate Xiang--who's become entangled with mobsters--has been shot. Distraught, Yu's world unravels further--friendships are lost, a troubled student self-destructs and Yu finds herself pregnant with Xiang's child. At the end, Yu aborts the pregnancy and, ultimately, finds herself alone.

Feature directorial debut for Chi Yin who graduated from Chiao Tung University in 1972 with a B.S. in Electronic Engineering. After two years' military service, he went to the U.S. for graduate studies in communications engineering. After receiving a MSEE from Ohio State University, six years working as a satellit specialist, and owning a business designing computer games in Taiwan, he returned to school to pursue a career in filmmaking. Chi Yi graduated from the prestigious film school at the University of California, Los Angeles and received his MFA degree in the summer of 1992. His fifty-five minute thesis film, "Heart is an Island (L.A. Ah-Jei", was selected for the 1992 Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei and the 1993 Asian American International Film Festival in New York.
