Synopsis

An evocation of the figure of the ill-fated poet and writer Daniil Ivanovich Kharms (1905-1942) by the use of archival footage and a subjective fictional reconstitution of the artist's life. Kharms was born in St. Petersberg where he began to give public readings of contemporary poetry, and was active in the "eccentric movement" and the Oberiu group which espoused the concept of Futurism (making one's life a piece of art). Late in 1931, Kharms, then under the influence of the poet Velimir Khlebnikov, was arrested and imprisoned on charges of distracting people from their industrial duties with his "transense" poetry. Exiled for a few months in 1932, he returned to Leningrad that same year and made his living by writing children's books. Persecuted by Stalinist authorities, he gradually found himself deprived of all means of expression. Kharms was arrested again during the summer of 1941, and died of starvation in prison.
