Synopsis

Three young Brahmin women are living on the estate of a wealthy guru who heads a religious sect. The three are widows and, accordingly, were assigned a marginal existence in their in-laws households. None wanted to comply with this tradition and promptly left. Durga, noisy and neurotic, has fled her home after her husband's death. Her goal is to take his ashes to a sacred river. A second widow is bravely trying to take care of her dead husband's land and estates, but she is betrayed by one of the overseers. Giribala, the most rebellious, demands the right to decide where and how to live. When her growing intimacy with a foreign scholar, Mark, alarms her family, she chooses a spectacular suicide over a life of unhappiness.
