Synopsis
Utilizing archival footage and survivors' testimonies, an exploration of intolerance in the Americas during World War II. In 1939, the St. Louis, a German luxury ship, sailed from Hamburg to Cuba with 917 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. On board they enjoyed a "dreamlike odyssey," but when they arrived in Cuba, their visas were canceled and entry denied. Despite the valiant efforts of the Joint Distribution Committee and international publicity, the St. Louis sailed back to Europe. Although the passengers received sanctuary in Holland, France, Belgium, and England, almost three-quarters of these unfortunate souls died in Nazi concentration camps.
