Synopsis
An investigation of the lives, art and sexual histories of three women artists: recently discovered Staten Island photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952), German Dadaist and photomontagist Hannah Hoch (1889-1978), and contemporary New York painter Nicole Eisenman (b. 1965). Although Eisenman is an "out" lesbian, Austen's and Hoch's relationships with women are less known. Were these women closeted? Can we reach across historical differences to claim them as lesbian or bisexual artists? And if we do, what is at stake politically?
