Synopsis
A father, in an attempt to save his son from becoming decrepit, tries to drive him to suicide. When both protagonists die we realize that we have been watching a 1930s production of Helder Prister Monteiro's stage play "The Immortals." The film then follows the story of two male audience members who meet two female high-class courtesans, but when they can't reconcile the jealousies they feel for being with women much more wealthier than they are, the one man tells the story of "The Mother of a River" to the other as a way to console his friend.
