Synopsis

A look at Tawain's White Terror of the '50s--the "verboten period" in which the city suffered severe unrest and instability due to KMT anti-commie witch hunts, Japanese colonization, U.S. colonization, and other threatening socio-poltical pressures which eventually led to a national "identity crisis" for the Taiwanese citizenry. The story is told through the travails of a recently released, elderly ex-con, Ko, who had been imprisoned for leftist activity. Thusly, Ko embarks upon a mission to track down the grave of and pay respect to an old collegue--his former best friend Chen, who died of questionable circumstance. Ko's odyssey not only charts painful memories of political turmoil, but also unearths broken family relationships, rendered irreparable, resulting from this murky period in his own country's history.
