Synopsis
During World War II, some of the earliest American ski enthusiasts convinced the U.S. War Department of the importance of creating a military division capable of scaling the high peaks of the Alps, and of fighting the Nazis in the harsh conditions of winter mountain terrains. These men eventually became the legendary 10th Mountain Division, and lured championship skiers, mountain climbers and European mountaineers fleeing Hitler into their ranks. The "10th" entered the war late, and in February of 1945, made a spectacular night climb up Italy's Riva Ridge, ambushing the heavily entrenched Germans on top. Over the next two months, the "10th" chased the Germans all the way to the Alps before the Third Reich surrendered. "Fire on the Mountain" covers the creation, grueling training, and daring war exploits of America's only mountain and winter warfare division, and when these heroes returned in peace, they used this courage and self-reliance to propel themselves to the top of their professions.
