Synopsis
As in Grymov's classic story of Mumu, a Russian mistress becomes fixated on her handsome, deaf groundskeeper Gerasim. However, Gerasim is deeply in love with Tanechka, the peasant washerwoman, forcing the Mistress to use deaperate measures to win his attention -- including staging her own funeral. When all else fails, the Mistress marries off Tanechka and breaks Gerasim's heart in the process. Lonely and despondent, Gerasim's only comfort is a little puppy he finds and names Mumu.
