Synopsis

As a child growing up in Mississippi, Roy Smith witnessed hangings, burnings, and many other atrocities committed against black men, women and children. However, he himself was not the victim of racial violence until he moved to Colorado in 1972 where he become a cowboy and the only black man in Gilpin County. There his troubles began as he subsequently lived through harrassment, verbal abuse, being shot at and hung from his ankles, and eventually run out of town. However Smith returned to Gilpin County, this time with a lawyer and a civil rights lawsuit in which he won a $700,000 settlement.
