Synopsis

Maria is the daughter of a well-respected doctor in a small Swedish village in 1820. She has been blind for 10 years, since the time that Russian troops raided the town. Then a mysterious Dane comes to town, calling himself a magnetist and claiming that he can cure Maria. The villagers see him as a charlatan, but Maria's father lets him stay, desperate to help his daughter. And Meisner succeeds, by realising that her blindness is psychological, the result of being raped by the soldiers. Soon, the two begin to fall in love, making Maria's suitor Stenius jealous and spiteful.
