Synopsis

Shigeru, a deaf teenage boy, finds a beat up surfboard on the beach and repairs it. He is on the lowest rung of Japanese society, uneducated, disabled and with few prospects. Still, he has a perseverance in his attempt to learn to surf that a pro surfer recognises, and begins to coach him. Soon, both Shigeru and his also deaf girlfriend Takako are surfing, and in this quiet sea find peace and a sense of achievement that is all too brief.
