Synopsis
Eighteen-year-old Private Berger is everyman: drafted into military service and sent to Austria's Eastern border with Hungary, he is neither filled with patriotic fervor, nor committed to any philosophy that would prevent him from serving. (The film is set in 1980, when the Communist threat to the east of Austria was taken seriously, at least by Austrians.) Like millions before him, he is bored to death, horny, a little afraid and a lot frustrated by the absurd routines that are a conscript's lot. How to cope? Berger holes up in the toilet, drawing Hieronymus Bosch-like landscapes and fantasizing elaborate sexual dramas.
