Synopsis
Osman, a selfish Turkish landowner, refuses to share his water supply with other tobacco farmers when their village is threatened with a severe drought. His younger brother, Hassan, who has recently married Bahar, disagrees with Osman's decision. Forced to guard his land from irate planters, Osman kills an intruder, but Hassan, in accordance with family deference to seniority, confesses to the crime. Hassan is imprisoned for 2 years for manslaughter, while Osman deviously attempts to win the affection of his sister-in-law. He is rejected until he convinces Bahar that Hassan has died in jail. Hassan is soon granted amnesty, however, and freed by a new political regime. Upon returning to the farm, he kills his treacherous brother and opens the floodgates to provide water for the other farmers.
