Synopsis

Surrounded by German forces, Boris Varissa, impeccably attired in a business suit, flees through a forest and comes upon a gravestone bearing his name. He arrives in a town where the name of lost World War II resistance fighter Jean Robin is honored. Purporting to have fought beside Jean, Boris takes lodging at an inn where he is not recognized and is met with hostility; Boris may have betrayed Jean. He proceeds to a château where Jean's wife, sister, and father live. As the story of his relationship with Jean develops, the details are contradictory and unconvincing. Boris seduces first the maid and then Jean's sister. Jean's father dies, and a Dr. Mueller arrives to sign his death certificate; Boris had claimed to know a Dr. Mueller in the resistance but the others had believed that there was no such person in the area. Boris makes advances to Jean's wife, and his seduction is on the point of success when Jean enters and without a word shoots Boris. Jean's wife mourns the dead man, who then arises to begin telling his story again.
