Synopsis

Maverick filmmaker Craig Baldwin investigates the 1991 legal confrontation between Island Records (representing the Irish supergroup U2) and Negativeland, the Bay Area guerrilla audio artists, whom Island charged with infringement of copyright and trademark: Negativeland had released an album using artwork that included the letter U and the numeral 2, as well as 35 seconds of one of U2's songs and some off-air obscenities by DJ Casey Kasem. Baldwin takes on this David and Goliath battle with Dadaish relish, exposing the vast differences between corporate culture and the independent artist. It is a wild and wooly ride through the land of cultural appropriationists and activists, such as the Barbie Liberation Organization, which exchanges voice boxes between Barbie and G.I. Joe dolls. Also featuring interviews with the Emergency Broadcast Network and the Tape-beatles.
