Synopsis
A political allegory in which the tale serves as a metaphorical critique of post-Ceausescu (post-Communist) Romania: On a fine morning, the senator from Daneliuc, a boisterous, imposing figure arrives in a small town in the Romanian countryside to open officially a new hydro project. After cutting the ceremonial ribbon, the senator gets interviewed on Swiss TV, where on a whim, the politician announces that he feels like eating snails for dinner on the following evening. By the next day, the village's picturesque rolling hills are dotted with villagers desperately seeking snails for the senator's dinner--and what begins as a congenial, communal search, turns into an ugly, competitive race, as the citizens curry to appease the appetite of the visiting politician.
