Synopsis
Like many minorities, African Americans have struggled to be accepted by Japanese society. Japanese misconceptions of African Americans have largely been shaped by media images, with little direct access to American culture. As Japan opens its doors to more ethnic diversity, including the population of approximately 5,000 African Americans who live and work in Japan, outdated ideas and stereotypes are changing.
