Synopsis

Young Jegoruska leaves his home in the Russian steppe, accompanied by his Uncle Kuzmiciov and the aged Father Christopher, to travel to the city where he will begin school. During his journey, many unfamiliar sights and new experiences contribute to his growing awareness: gay celebrations at village feasts, farm workers in the fields, an adventure at a lonely inn, meeting and falling in love with the beautiful Countess Dranitsky, and seeing a dying man abandoned by the roadside. Jegoruska becomes ill during a storm, and his dreams turn to nightmares of the recent experiences. When he recovers, however, he is no longer a frightened little boy but well on his way to being a man.
