Synopsis

Daniel Mylrea, a fisherman and the son of the Bishop of the Isle of Man, is in love with Mona, the daughter of the Deemster. Mona's father and her brother Ewan disapprove of Dan, and consequently, when an argument breaks out between Ewan and Dan, the Deemster orders that the lovers separate forever. After learning that they are continuing to meet in secret, the Deemster convinces Ewan that Dan has dishonored Mona. In a rage, Ewan attacks Dan with a knife, and is hurled over a cliff and killed. Dan surrenders and is tried in court with his father officiating as supreme judge. Sentenced to become an outcast with whom none may communicate, Dan lives alone in a hut by the sea. Seven years later, a plague ravages through the island and the people anxiously await the arrival of a monk from Ireland who carries the antidote. The monk's ship is wrecked and he floats ashore, the sole survivor. Reaching Dan's hut, the monk dies from his injuries, but Dan, now disguised as the monk, fulfills the latter's mission. When all but one of the healing powders are used up, Dan sickens with the plague. Confronted with the alternative of saving himself or the Deemster, Dan gives his old enemy the antidote and returns to his hut, where he dies in Mona's arms.
