Synopsis

Dr. Chevrele is enamored of Mrs. Dupont, the wife of his benefactor, but she is repulsed by his advances. In revenge, he drugs and kidnaps her, then places the dead body of a physically similar young prostitute in her bed. When Mrs. Dupont awakens in the Moulin Rouge, she is led to believe that she is a woman of loose morals. Meanwhile Dupont returns from a trip and, finding the presumed body of his wife, calls for Dr. Chevrele. Chevrele says that Mrs. Dupont is dead, but her husband, noticing some odd marks on the woman, refuses to believe him. Chevrele accuses Dupont of being insane with grief and has him sent to an asylum. Eventually, Dupont escapes and is able to find his wife and rescue her from the designs of Chevrele.
