Synopsis
Since childhood, Sylvia Lacey, the orphaned daughter of an impoverished artist, has been shunned by her staid Boston relatives. Arriving in Boston for a visit, Sylvia overhears her spinster aunt, Martha Lacey, complaining to John Dunham, the young law partner of her uncle, Calvin Trent, of the burden that Sylvia poses to her. Hurt, Sylvia rejects all offers of help from her aunt and uncle, until Dunham insists that she take a loan from Judge Trent. Through her aunt and uncle, Sylvia meets kindly Thinkright Johnson, a distant relative and her late mother's old sweetheart. Johnson convinces her to join him for the summer in Portland, where she meets socialite Edna Derwent, Dunham's former fiancée. Sylvia at first resents Edna's social position and former relationship to Dunham, but eventually Johnson convinces her of Edna's friendship. Johnson also helps to reconcile Sylvia with her aunt and uncle, who renovate an old mill to provide their niece with a luxuriously appointed studio in which Edna also gives her art lessons.
