Synopsis

When wealthy hotel owner Arthur Thome discovers that his clerk, Richard Tretman, has "raised" a check, he threatens to prosecute unless Richard sends his wife Emma to his apartment for an afternoon tryst. Richard forces Emma to go, and after having his way with her, Thome reneges on his promise not to prosecute. Richard subsequently is given a long prison sentence. Emma is forced to accept a position as a stenographer for a less-than-reputable company, and her boss makes advances toward her. She becomes depressed and tries to drown herself but is saved by a young writer. Initially, she is suspicious of the writer's motives when he offers her legitimate work, but when she receives word that her husband has died in prison, she comes to realize that the writer is sincere and that she is falling in love with him.
