Synopsis

In a small city, wealthy Walter Norman becomes an alcoholic and loses his sweetheart to James Harker, whom he fights in a restaurant. After Norman's friend Richard Grant cures him of his desire to drink, Norman goes to New York and becomes engaged to Julia Landis, who abhors drinkers. Harker comes to New York to raise money for a dubious business enterprise, and meets Wall Street broker John Royce, who loves Julia. When Royce learns of Norman's past, he offers Harker money to exhibit Norman in an alcoholic state to Julia. Harker succeeds, and Julia breaks the engagement. Norman goes on wild binges and loses his friends and money, while Julia marries Royce, whom Harker blackmails. After Norman inherits a fortune and learns about Royce's trick, he ruins Royce in the market. When Julia learns about the trick, she pledges her love to Norman, but he tells her to forgive Royce, and permits him to recover. After Harker shoots Royce, Norman is convicted of the murder, but Harker's wife learns the truth and Norman, reprieved, begins a new life with Julia.
