Synopsis

Cora, the wife of a wealthy Parisian businessman, Daniel, is involved in an affair with Henri, an unscrupulous garage mechanic who has set his sights on Cora's fortune. Daniel becomes suspicious and hires a detective to investigate, but the detective is unsuccessful in pinpointing Cora's extramarital activities. Daniel overhears a telephone conversation between Cora and her lover and mistakenly believes that the man is his business partner, Simon, who is Henri's brother. Since Daniel refuses Cora a divorce, Henri persuades her to put sleeping pills into the thermos of coffee her husband will take with him on an upcoming business trip. The morning after Daniel's departure, Cora is informed that her husband has been killed in an automobile accident. Guilt-stricken, she discovers at the morgue that the man killed was actually Simon, who substituted for the suspicious Daniel at the last moment. At Simon's burial, Daniel appears, and the truth is revealed: Cora omitted the sleeping pills at the last moment, but Henri had sabotaged Daniel's car in order to guarantee the success of the plan. Daniel forgives the remorseful Cora, and they effect a somewhat uncertain reconciliation.
