Synopsis
In Paris in 1925, a romance between artist Edouard Lavigne and his model, Julie, is broken up by Edouard's father, who insists that his son return home and marry the heir to a nail factory. The business prospers, but Edouard secretly wishes that he had remained with Julie and pursued his artistic career, and he hopes to see his son Jean become the artist he had hoped to be. Jean, however, is interested only in the family business. Edouard dies and leaves two-thirds of his estate to "Julie the Redhead" or her children. Jean seeks out Julie in order to buy her share of the inheritance so that control of the factory will remain in the family. Julie has died, but her 22-year-old daughter, a trapezist also named Julie, is entitled to the bequest. Jean courts and marries the young woman in order to acquire her legacy. On their wedding night, Jean discovers that Julie is not the daughter of his father's mistress but rather her niece, and that her motives for marrying Jean are as mercenary as his own. After a few stormy months of marriage, however, the couple find they are indeed in love.
