Synopsis
THE WOMEN: Antonio, a middle-aged bachelor, finds that his regular mistresses are busy and calls Bruna, a woman with whom he has been having a casual affair. She arrives and shocks him by announcing that she has just been married, but she goes to bed with him anyway, claiming that her marriage will not alter their relationship. That afternoon, Antonio goes to the beach with Valeria, another girl friend, who lures him into bed and afterwards reveals that she was a virgin. Antonio is left perplexed and realizes that, despite his worldliness, his life is vacant and absurd. THE SERPENT: Professor Brenner and his wife, Hilde, a couple whose marriage is unstable, are vacationing in Sicily. While visiting Aphrodite's temple, Hilde tries to arouse her husband's attention by pretending that she mistakes a snakeskin belt for a real snake, but he only scoffs at her. Later, their car breaks down on a lonely road, and two truckdrivers give Hilde a ride to town to get help. She half hopes that they will attack her, but they are uninterested so she vindictively accuses them of rape. Her husband arrives at the police station to explain Hilde's fantasies and clear the drivers. He realizes that he has neglected Hilde and decides to pay more attention to her. THE SOLDIER: In a stuffy train compartment, a soldier, Tomagra, attempts to seduce a voluptuous widow, despite the presence of three other people. The widow remains impassive, but after the others leave the train, Tomagra and the widow wordlessly make love. When the widow disembarks, Tomagra eagerly follows, but she is whisked off by relatives, leaving him alone and confused.
